Football Academy

We operate an elite football excellence and education programme aimed at 16-19 year olds with a passion for sport for students of any gender. We combine practical playing with academic achievement and life skills, providing students with an excellent steppingstone to combine progression in football, sports coaching, physical education and sports development. The BTEC based education programme is delivered in partnership with Suffolk New College.

Needham Market Academy deliver the elite coaching, match provision and teaching all at Needham Market Football Club. Students receive individual and team coaching from our highly qualified coaching team as well as guidance on individual fitness, nutritional advice, and regular appraisals to monitor progress both on and off the pitch.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport

  • The stimulating and employer-appealing Level 3 Sport explores a number of areas which enable you to gain a wider insight into areas such as Sports Psychology, Fitness Testing, Anatomy and Physiology, Coaching, and more. This course is ideal for those looking to gain employment in the Sports Industry, and for those aiming to progress onto a Sport-related course at University.

    Over the 2 year course you are required to complete 11 mandatory units including Sports Leadership, Coaching and Leading for Participation, Sports Psychology and Physical Education and the Care of Young People. In addition, you will have 3 externally assessed units; Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being, and Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity. The study programme is assessed using a variety of vocationally relevant methods which reflect industry, including presentations, observations, written reports, and discussions.

    Students are also required to take part in relevant work experience in a sport setting and may also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications in Fitness Instructing, Coaching, and Sports Leaders.

    All students who have not achieved a grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English or Maths will need to study these subjects alongside their chosen qualification.

  • The study programme offers an extensive study of all sporting areas, including Coaching, Nutrition, Leadership, Fitness Testing and Training, and Anatomy and Physiology. You will have the opportunity to learn in the classroom and participate in training and matches utilising the Academies fantastic facilities as well as pursue work experience opportunities with our wide range of top employers.

    Educational trips are arranged each year to widen the student experience through attendance at sports conventions and alternative sporting venues.

  • Students who complete this course may progress onto University, studying subjects to include Sports Coaching, Sports Development, PE Teaching, and Strength and Conditioning, or make the transition into the workforce in areas such as Leisure Centre Operations and Management, gaining an apprenticeship, Fitness, and many more.
  • 5 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) including English and/or Maths

BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Sport

  • An inspiring one-year course with an appealing blend of theory and practical, exploring a multitude of fitness and sport pathways. The Level 2 Sport prepares students for progression onto our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma and helps to provide a range of skills and knowledge for those looking to enter employment in areas such as Health and Fitness, the Leisure Industry, and Sports Coaching.

    On the level 2 Sport, you will study exciting modules such as Practical Sport Performance, Leading Sports Activities, Lifestyle and Well-Being, The Mind and Sports Performance and Running a Sports Event. In addition, there are two external moderated units which include Fitness for Sport and Exercise and Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance.

    Students are required to be in the Academy at least 3 days per week and are supported to complete 50 hours of relevant work experience, as well as opportunities to take part in sport in the community.

    The programme is assessed using a variety of methods including assignments, practical performance, observations, presentations and discussions.

    All students who have not achieved a grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English or Maths will need to study these subjects alongside their chosen qualification.

  • Students will have the opportunity to experience both practical and theory lessons utilising the Academy's fantastic facilities and are taught by experienced and enthusiastic industry professionals. Students have the opportunity to plan, deliver and coach sports events as well as explore and undertake fitness training at a local Gym. There are also visits to local leading sport providers to learn practical skills in a new environment.

  • The Level 2 Sport assists students with entry into the sports industry and enables learners to progress onto our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport to further your education and training.
  • 3 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) including English and/or Maths

Representing Needham Market Football Club

Whilst studying on any of the sports courses at Needham Market Academy, students are expected to represent Needham Market Football Club within the range of teams available. Needham Market Football Club are the highest ranked non-league club in Suffolk and will offer football suitable for your playing ability and a pathway to the first team if you are deemed to be at the required standard. Whilst we cannot promise to make all our students football superstars, we can guarantee a first-class environment in which to learn and develop.

Cost

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16–18.

There is a mandatory Needham Market Academy training kit to purchase, which can be purchased via our club shop. Trips vary to meet the interests of student groups with information on costs available upon enrolment and throughout the year.

Progression Agreement with University of Suffolk

Needham Market Academy has a partnership with the University of Suffolk (UOS) through a Progression Agreement for all six-sport science and coaching degrees with UOS. The Progression Agreement formalises engagement between the University and Needham Market Academy and allows our students who complete the BTEC Extended Diploma to benefit from a number of guaranteed Higher Education places at the University.
