Students from Needham Market Academy had the exciting opportunity to take part in a military-style experience day hosted by the 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery at Merville Barracks in Colchester.
The day, organised and led by Troop Sergeant Major Richard Jackson, offered a unique insight into military life through a range of physical and practical challenges designed to build teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
Throughout the experience, students took on a demanding 5km forest run, tackled command tasks, and learned emergency first aid techniques in field conditions. They also gained hands-on experience in field cooking, practised movement techniques during a stalking session, and tested their focus and composure on a firing range simulator.
One of the highlights of the day was the log and stretcher race, which put students’ teamwork, endurance, and determination to the test in a competitive, high-energy environment.
Academy staff praised the visit as a fantastic opportunity for personal development.
“It was an incredible experience for the students to step outside of their comfort zones, develop new skills, and work together in a high-pressure setting. We're very grateful to the 7th Parachute Regiment and Sergeant Major Jackson for their time and effort in organising the day day,”
The visit is part of the academy’s wider commitment to offering real-world enrichment opportunities that support the growth of character, leadership, and aspiration in its students.
